Day 15: Leading a bike tour solo has been challenging. For the past day and a half, our group has been stopped in Buffalo, where the home of Teen Treks is located and we have been showered with love and support. We stayed in bunks at the Buffalo Hostel which is essentially the dreamiest hospitable space. My group was greeted by Teen Treks’ leaders and board members who welcomed them in, cooked a homemade meal for them, laughed at my kids stories, took them out in the city to see all the local spots, played frisbee with them, ate wings with them, biked in the rain with them, and simply connected with my group. My Trekkers loved this experience, especially the boys getting the opportunity to connect with some of the fun and wild male leaders. My heart is happy, and I myself feel rejuvenated for the time well spent with the wonderful bike touring community in Buffalo, and the friends who shared their time and resources to support me and my crew. I also felt renewal inside the hostel, sitting on the comfy common room couches and drinking multiple cups of coffee while reading random books off the shared library shelf and talking to strangers about their travels. We are back on the road today, in Middleport, NY. Tomorrow, we set out for our first century to complete 100 miles to Geneva along the Erie Canalway Trail. It’s good to remember that we’re not really ever alone.
