Riding on shaded trails, dangling tired legs from hammock beds, soaking in cold creeks, fire by night and warm meals for the soul... all this is wonderful, but it’s even better with great people by your side.
I thought this trip would be about the scenery, overcoming challenges, the joy of riding. But it has surprised me, as it has unanimously been about the people along the journey. Continuing south through Alabama, I think back at some of the notable people I’ve met in just the last week. The astrophysicist folk musician who’s live show blew me away, the school for natural home building, and the cozy Cobb hut a couple welcomed me into. Those experiences and people will be with me forever. Beyond unique and hospitable strangers, I navigated this route in order to see family and friends along the way. In North Carolina, cousins showed me love when they tirelessly brushed stubborn helmet-dreads out of my hair. My sister-in-law took me through a restorative yoga practice my muscles yearned to receive. In Georgia, a lifelong friend reminded me of the deep joy in being fully known. And then there is the hand-written letters I’ve received by friends who understand the mental challenge of a long physical pursuit. And the text messages from previous hosts checking in on me. Phone calls, good vibes and prayers from friends. The adventurous individuals who’ve spontaneously decided to ride with me. The magical and timely materials I’ve received that have made such a difference in my comfort, safety and sustainability. The sweet, sweet man of mine at home, empowering me with his sound but strong love and support. So many hands, hearts and feet are with me out on this road. Through various riding partners and stints of solo trekking, I’ve never felt alone. Much love to all of you! You dream-supporting friends and friends I’ve yet to meet. There is power in your presence, and I long to share this love I’ve received from you everyone I go.
