I have been living in the West Bank for less than a month, and I have seen a culture known for their hospitality unable to give freely, I have seen shop owners nearly asleep inside their store, and I have seen shameless, desperate actions done by good people to take a little bread home to their family.
And then I came across the “Adam’s Naturals” booth, a fair-trade and handmade olive oil soap company handcrafted by local women in the Eastern Mediterranean city of Nablus, in the same way that it has been for over 1000 years. "Nabulsi soap,” as the locals refer to it, had such fame in the 1040’s, it was exported all around the globe. Unfortunate events ceased soap production in the 20th century and it wasn’t until Brett’s chance discovery in 2011 that this product was reintroduced to the world. Brett said he was touring the country when he used a Nabulsi soap in Jerusalem hotel and heard the story of its ancient healing properties. He saw opportunity for economic empowerment for women cooperatives in the Near East, women of all faiths and nationalities. So Brett took his idea home, found a few socially-conscious entrepreneurs and started an international fare-trade organization. Currently being sold in Pennslyvania, where Brett is from, as well as online, his vision is to spread all throughout the states, his next target is major cities in California. Not only do the proceeds of all sales go directly back to the multi-national team of Near East artisans, but 10 % of profits go to internationally accredited charities which help refugees and displaced families of all religions and nationalities in the Middle East. “Adam’s Naturals” or “Nabulsi” is made from harvested, pressed olives straight from the Nablus farm, along with distilled water and mineral salts. The natural moisturizing power of pure olive oil gives the soaps, balms and lotions distinct luxury. I must say, it feels quite smooth and healing on my hands!
