I hosted my first bike traveler since moving to New York. Daniel, a French-Canadian who’s lived in Florida most of his adulthood, retired early from a career in film development and resolved to bike around the world with no end in mind. When asked why, Daniel answered with a familiar response I’ve heard many bike tourists mimic, he “no longer wanted to be caught inside the wheel.” Sure, he could stay working, make a little more money before retiring, but what is there to gain that would be more valuable than seeing the world first hand, Daniel said. When I’m not lucky enough to be out on the road myself, I am glad to provide the resources to someone on their own journey and cling to the fresh perspective the traveler carries so well.
