UIW Ph.D. Candidates Launch Global Education Effort

With over 25 years of military service, Todd Speer and Mark Alvarez have gathered research on extreme poverty across the globe. The former Army Officers, and current doctoral candidates in UIW's Dreeben School of Education, conducted humanitarian efforts initiated by the Department of Defense, (DoD) tracking poverty's impact on human trafficking and migration.

VIVA SA: Fresh Produce Initiative Brings Life to San Antonio Food Desert

This spring, city leaders and the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine worked together to launch a new a pilot program in an effort to bring healthy, affordable foods into convenient stores. The VIVA San Antonio Healthy Corner Store Initiative targets food deserts, or areas ailed by limited access to non-processed, whole foods.

In 2018, 68 homeless individuals died on the streets of San Antonio. Brenda Mascorro, executive director of the South Alamo Regional Alliance for the Homeless (SARAH) shared that sobering statistic with the crowd of volunteers gathered to help ensure this doesn't happen again. "That's 68 community members," Mascorro emphasized.
